A curious, 1866 French account of the American Civil War published by François Paul Vigo Roussillon. ‘Puissance Militaire des Etats-Unis’ was a highly influential reference which successfully and accurate described both the North and the South, the make-up of each army, and the innovated approaches to war such as volunteer militia, new ways of arming soldiers, communication strategies, and soldier transportation. Roussillon wrote this work based on the French documents of Lieutenant-Colonel Francois de Chanal.
During the American Civil War, the French military was launching its second intervention in Mexico. This work was written for the French army to enlighten them on the innovations made by the Americans. This first edition features an impressive, huge folding map of the United States!
