Description
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973, Spain) "La Pique en Rouge et Jaune"(The Picador in Red and Yellow) The image of a Picador (bullfighter on horseback who pricks the bull with a lance to weaken and goad it) was originally created in 1959 as a linocut in a limited edition of 50. Picasso worked in this medium (linocuts/linogravures) extensively from 1958 to 1961. Then in 1962, Picasso and the Louise Leiris Gallery cooperated with the production of this rare (after the original) linocut suite, meticulously recreated in reduced size. The printing was done in West Germany, with a French edition published by Editions Cercle D'Art and an American edition published by Harry Abrams, both in 1962. The 1962 after set are superior in quality, having been designed as actual linocuts and printed on heavy wove paper with a richly textured printed surface. This work of art is a facsimile color linoleum cut, based on the 1962 edition published by Harry Abrams in the USA, after the original by Pablo Picasso. Fine impression, wide margins. Signed in the lower right, possibly as a complimentary signature (Picasso is believed to have signed some of these prints as favors to friends, however the signature on this print has not been verified by an expert and is being offered as attributed to the artist.) Sheet Size is 12.5" x 14.25." The piece is unframed and is in very good condition. Provenance: Private collection, Texas.
