Description
"India: Land of The Black Pagoda", by Lowell Thomas, illustrated with photographs by H.A. Chase and the Author, published by P.F. Collier & Son Corporation, New York, copyright 1930.
Lowell Jackson Thomas (April 6, 1892 - August 29, 1981) was an American writer, broadcaster, and traveler, best known as the man who made Lawrence of Arabia famous. Thomas was born in Woodington, Darke County, Ohio, to Harry and Harriet (Wagner) Thomas. His father was a doctor, his mother a teacher. In 1900, the family moved to the mining town of Victor, Colorado. Thomas worked there as a gold miner, a cook, and a reporter on the newspaper.
Written to entice, entertain, excite, and educate you, Lowell Thomas spent two years in India gathering stories to include in this book. With an often spellbinding, even sensational style, Lowell Thomas relates stories of Indian history, culture, geography, and conditions. (And British influence, past and present.)
When Lowell Thomas set out to see India, he did it on the grand scale. Intending to stay about four months, he remained two years. He traveled from the extreme southern tip of India to the slopes of the Himalayas, from the India where there are no British to where John Bull rules supreme-in all, more than sixty thousand miles, through a land of the most amazing contrasts in the world. Thomas offers an invaluable account on mysterious India - giving a detailed look at life in that country, which includes indescribable squalor treading on the heels of unimaginable luxury; profound sanctity rubbing elbows with sensuality beyond belief; wisdom and philosophy hand in hand with hypocrisy and ignorance - the whole spectacle presents one contrast after another.
