This work, according to the preface of the first edition, offered a public record of the effect of the Civil War on this and other Northeastern states. The Civil War implication, however, are preceded by a thorough outline of the state’s complete history, its origins, its foundations, and the individuals who helped establish its statehood.
In this work, Headley gives accounts of various regiments that surfaced during the Civil War, their commanding officers, and even accounts of fallen soldiers. Finally, the appendix includes descriptions and notes on battles fought in Massachusetts.
