Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an oil on canvas painting, attributed to modern cubist Diego Rivera (Mexican,1886 -1957). Hand inscription at bottom reads, "Diego Rivera 40". Image depicts a young Mexican girl dressed in traditional clothes. Her long black hair is braided and adored with radiant flowers. The vibrant colors are a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. The artists' delicate, detailed brushstrokes give life to the young lady's eyes. The viewer is captivated by her innocence and beauty. Painting is executed in the Social Realist style for which Diego Rivera is so beloved. This impressive modern art masterpiece would be a highlight of any art collector's gallery. Painting is done over a previously painted canvas. Overall unframed canvas measures approximately 28.5" x 20.5".

Paper label affixed en verso reads in part "From the Galleries of ASSOCIATED AMERICAN ARTISTS" along with a New York City Address. Label goes to describe the artist as "Diego Rivera", title as "Portrait" and the medium as "Oil". The label ascribes a ledger number of "384". Red ink stamp also en verso is written in a foreign language, likely Spanish.

Diego Rivera (Spanish, December 8, 1886 – November 24, 1957) was a prominent Mexican painter. His large frescoes helped establish the Mexican mural movement in Mexican art. Between 1922 and 1953, Rivera painted murals in, among other places, Mexico City, Chapingo, Cuernavaca, San Francisco, Detroit, and New York City. In 1931, a retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Rivera had a volatile marriage with fellow Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
