Description
Description: Lincoln Mary
Mary Lincoln Autographed and Signed Envelope Front Panel--Scarce!
Front panel of an envelope addressed and signed by the First Lady to Supreme Court justice David Davis, at the Supreme Court, postmarked from Chicago, June 18. Signed by Mary Todd Lincoln as "Mary Lincoln". A very fine example of a rare first Lady's signature. Delicately framed in beige, claret and breaded gilt, with an engraved portrait of Mrs. Lincoln, wearing roses in her hair. Framed to a completed size of 11.25" x 13.5".
David Davis, more than anyone else, had helped engineer Lincoln's victory at the Chicago convention and would serve as his campaign manager during the presidential election of 1860. The two men were close from their days on the circuit court together. When U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Archibald Campbell resigned over what he perceived to be Lincoln's intention of going to war with the seceding Southern states, the President nominated Davis to fill the vacancy. After Lincoln's assassination, Judge Davis was an administrator of his estate. Signatures of Mary Lincoln are rare.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
