Description: Mitchell Margaret

Gone With The Wind, Margaret Mitchell TLS, on Wishing to Attend the Annual Georgia Editors' Meeting Months before Her Death

Two page typed letter signed, "Margaret Mitchell Marsh." Typed on rectos on both pages with her personal letterhead,7" x 10.25." Dated February 4, 1949. Small paper clip stain to first page, else near fine with expected folds. Accompanied by the original slightly grubby mailing envelope, 7.5" x 4". Verso with adhered mounting paper remnants.

A warm TLS written 13 years after the publication of her celebrated novel Gone With The Wind and 9 years after the release of the block buster movie. Mitchell writes "Dear Doctor Mayos," expressing disappointment that he had recently been to Atlanta without visiting, reporting on the improved health and recent activities of her husband John, suggesting that he take up psychiatry in a town closer to Atlanta, and recalling visits to the West Coast of FL before the war. Mitchell is also reflective of her desire to go to "the annual Georgia editor's meeting at Athens during this period."

Her letter is shown in part below:

". . . You may think seventy is old, but we do not, and we feel that a man of your age and knowledge has much of value to give and that it is a sheer waste if you are not giving it. . . . [If your health is good and you like our mild winters, why don't you pick some small North Florida or South Georgia town and go back to the practice of psychiatry. . . . (I notice in today's paper that . . . our Legislature is making a long needed investigation of our state asylum, where there are 9,000 inmates. There are eight doctors for the 9,000.) . . ."

Although it is clear by her letter that Mitchell remained desirous to remain a part of the Atlantic writer community, she would die merely 6 months later at the young age of 48, from a tragic accident.

A rare signed touching typed letter by this iconic author.
