Robert Indiana (American, 1928-2018) "NUMBERS" is an artist book of bound silkscreens by Robert Indiana and Black Mountain poet Robert Creeley, published in 1968 by Edition Domberger Stuttgart and Galerie Schmela Dusseldorf. This limited edition book of ten stunning and iconic silkscreens is a rare find. The book is bound with softcover wraps with French folding flaps, was published in a stated unsigned edition of 2500 - and features Creeley's poems printed in German and English, bound in with ten silkscreens of Indiana's numbers series (1 to 0.)The silkscreens are often removed from the bound book and hung separately. The book is in the original softback slipcase. All of the interior pages of poems and text and all 10" silk screens are in fine condition. According to the artist, his fascination with numbers stemmed from an itinerant childhood in which he lived in twenty-one houses by the time he was seventeen. Indiana first took on numbers as an artistic subject in a series of paintings in 1965, at which time he assigned each number a specific color scheme. He later wrote, "The color choices were based upon chromatic associations with the ten stages of man's life." Indiana's number series begin with one, birth, and end with zero, "standing in for ten, but fully representing death."
