Very scarce Harpers Ferry Model 1855 2-band infantry rifle with steel furniture. Overall Good to near VG. Lock markings are clear 1859 US Harpers Ferry etc. Barrel breech markings have been burnished away. This is complete and mechanically functional. It shows honest age, and wear from use, with evidence of cleaning in the last half century or so. Affixed to the left stock flat is a 20th century brass tag stamped C.W, Davies. No way of knowing if this comemorates the soldier who carried it, or if it is a 20th century collector's identification tag. These M1855s are among the scarcest of the .58 caliber longarms from the Civil War. They were the model on hand in the arsenal when the Confederates captured it. A key US martial weapon and proper for display with Union or Confederate artifacts.
