Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an acrylic painting on board, rendered in the abstract expressionist style of Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). This dynamic image depicts a collage of dripping, organic lines. Traces of pure color mix and mingle with one another, creating a dynamic vibrancy that is singular to Pollock's brand of "action painting". This handsome piece would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery. Overall measurements are approximately 10.75" x 24".

This unique piece features several markings on its reverse side. Two illegible stamps can be seen at center. A handwritten inscription at left reads, "20 x 24", with an affixed label that reads, "24 x 10 5/8".

Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) was a hugely prolific artist of the mid-20th century, whose "drip painting" (sometimes called "action painting") broke ground for countless artists - from Helen Frankenthaler to Morris Louis, Frank Stella, and many others. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, the paintings of Janet Sobel, and the indigenous art of North America. Today, Pollock's work lives on in a blaze of legend, movement, and critical debate. This was exactly his intention.

Pollock's wife, the artist Lee Krasner, once offered an anecdote that seems to say it all:

"[Pollock] used to give his pictures conventional titles ... but now he simply numbers them. Numbers are neutral. They make people look at a picture for what it is - pure painting."
