Description
Dimensions: 2-1/2" H x 15-1/4" Dia.
Chinese Ming Dynasty blue and white porcelain plate. Sturdily potted with gently rounded sides, central interior hand painted with flowering and fruiting ripe pomegranates abundant. Eight detached uptala sprays radiating around the low foot ring, the broad everted mouth rim with a band of 'Lingzhi' scroll within double-line. The conforming exterior decorated with stylized floral sprays. The pomegranate (shiliu) signifies the sixth month of the lunar calendar and, because of its many seeds, represents fertility, offspring and descendants.
For this reason, the pomegranate is an important symbol in Chinese marriages.
The first character (shi) has the same pronunciation as the word for "generations" (shi) and thus strengthens the meaning as generations of descendants.
