Dimensions: 16-1/8" H x 13-3/8" W
Chinese Qing Dynasty blue and red Quatre-foil moon vase. Tall ovoid body, with bulbous lower region sweeping up into a slender neckline and onion-shaped head, floral shape form rim, supported on short foot ring with double blue lines ring. Two archaic pattern ribbon handles flanked from upper neck to the shoulder rim. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in clean white underglaze base color which contrast against the cobalt blue design color. The center moon medallion body adorned with abundant ripe lychee tree interspersed with foliage and hanging magpie bird on the branch, enclosed with double fine blue lines floral shape form. The shoulder decorated with scrolling tendril and upturning lappets festooned on the neck, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. repeating taotie mask adorned on the foot base rim, enclosed with double fine blue rings lines. The Lychee or Lychee is best known for its white juicy fruit from late summer; the flesh of the fruit surrounds a large, gnarled kernel. The latter wish gives it a role in the marriage celebration. If lychees are combined with water chestnuts they symbolize cleverness: ling li. The fruits are considered yang in traditional medicine and so are eaten to offset an excess of yin. The Lines of the drawings are clear, the light and dark shades are subtle. The colors are harmonious, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous, the shape is uniformly proportioned.
Mark on under base, a six underglaze script characters reign mark, Qianlong Reign Period of Great Qing.
