Uncommon 1st ed. portfolio of maps important in Virginia history. An excellent and handy resource for collectors, dealers, educators and historians. “Description of the Country, Virginia’s Cartographers and Their Maps 1607-1881” by E. M. Sanchez-Saavedra. Pub. 1975 by Virginia State Library – first edition. (1) John Smith map of 1612 – 12.75 x 16.125 in b/w; (2) John Senex 1719 revision of a 1673 map by Herrman – 19.25 x 22 in o/l color; (3) Fry-Jefferson map of 1775 in four separate plates – 15.5 x 24.125 each in o/l color; (4) French nautical chart of Chesapeake Bay in 1778 – 18.25 x 26.75 in b/w; (5) Thomas Kitchin’s view of the United States in 1783 – 16 x 19.75 in o/l color; (6) Hermann Boye’s 1827-1859 nine-sheet map – 17.75 x 26.75 each in b/w; (7) Claudius Crozet’s 1848 internal improvements map – 17.375 x 26.625 in color; (8) Capt. Peter S. Michie’s manuscript survey of Richmond in 1865 – 21.5 x 23.625 in b/w; and (9) William Barton Rogers’s geological survey of 1835 – 13.25 x 20.25 in color. Book with self covers is 5.5 x 8.5 (130 pp.) Maps and book fine (two of the twenty plates have single fold). Portfolio sun-faded around edges, small bit of tearing and wear at corners of foldover; some wear at extremities.
