Description
Very rarely encountered, a fine-quality type made for guerilla commanders of the revolutionary era during the Diaz Revolt (1876-1880,) likely in Oaxaca. The steel hilt with finely pierced and silver-inlaid mounts, displaying Spanish Colonial characteristics; notably the small, spherical pommel and cup and knucklebow placed above the guard. The grip of wood, the liner of tooled leather. The fine, paneled blade lightly curved and single-edged, with narrow fullers and expanded back edge, struck at the right forte, TOLEDO ANO 1880 and 508 at the base of the blade. In its leather scabbard, the separately applied leather locket and chape with fine piteado work in intricate floral and geometrical motifs. Overall length 100.2cm. Condition III
