Description
A Late Roman flask modeled as a bird, 5th – 7th Century AD, perhaps a dove. Composed of several wheel thrown parts, a central spout with two handles and a conical base. The buffware is decorated with brown slip, detailing the tail feathers, wings, breast feathers and facial features. Some losses, but a scarcer later figural pottery form. L: 6 1/2" (16.5 cm); H: 3 3/4" (9.5 cm). Cf. Bailey, Catalogue of Terracottas in British Museum, Vol. IV, p. 187-8, 3776.
