A Qajar gold-inlaid iron ceremonial cow-headed mace, Gorz, 19th centuryThe head inlaid with lobed cartouches, one with Farsi script
NOTE: Another example is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, from the collection of George C. Stone, accession #36.25.1882, where reference is made to the mace of the Persian hero Bahram Gur, which commemorated the cow which nursed him. Such maces were also used by Firadun. Cow-headed maces were also used by Zoroastrians as a symbol of their ongoing struggle against the forces of Evil.
