Description
Salome & the Baptist is an original ink and graphite on paper by Gerard De Lairesse (1640 -1711) created sometime before 1690. Signed by Gerard De Lairesse on verso, Depicts a biblical scene in ink of Salome beheading John the Baptist. Measurements: Inside 8.63 inches by 9 inches.. Piece is provided unframed allowing buyer to choose how to display verso inscription in their collection. Gerard De Lairesse was well known painter in the 1600s in Holland, Belgium until he became blind in 1690. He was well known by other famed artists of the time and even sat for Rembrant in 1655. Lairesee has sold for over $130,000 at auction. 1% of hammer price for all items sold at Masters of Art Volume II Art Series Auction will be donated to the Humane Society.
Condition
Overall good condition. Reviewed out of frame by naked eye and under UV light. Some discoloring noted as is common with a piece 100s of years old. Verso inscription by Lairesse is crisp and clear.
