Description
Intricately carved Cantonese card case from the early 19th century that has been carved with scholars in the garden. The card case has a removable lid and was used for calling cards. The carving is mirrored on the front and back with exacting scenes of scholars in a garden surrounded by pagodas and trees. Even the sides are intricately carved. The lid fits tight. The flange and case are carved from the one piece of wood. The same is true for the lid. The wood is lightweight with a yellow-brown color. It has a nice patina after so many years. It looks and feels much like sandalwood, but I don’t detect a sandalwood odor. I feel that it is likely carved from boxwood, but I can not guarantee it. MEASUREMENTS 4 1/8” (10.5 cm) long x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) wide x ½” (1.3 cm) thick. Weighs 1.9 oz (50 g) CONDITION There are no breaks, chips, or cracks. The case is entire. An amazing tour de force of the carver‘s art. It will be a great addition to a collection or out on a table as a conversation piece.
