Description
Tim Duffy, Hillsborough, North Carolina. "Death Triangle". Pigment print, 2018. Tim Duffy is a folklorist, photographer, and founder of the Music Maker Relief Foundation, which supports Blues musicians throughout the South. Duffy has spent years photographing Music Makers musicians and is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. His most recent project is Freeman Vines: Hanging Tree Guitars, a photography book and exhibition highlighting the handmade guitars and sculptures by Freeman Vines, an artist, a luthier, and a spiritual philosopher. In 2015 Vines befriends Duffy and the two begin to document the guitars, setting off a mutual outpouring of creativity. But when Vines acquires a stack of wood from the site of a lynching, he and Duffy found themselves each grappling with the spiritual unrest and the psychic toll of racial violence living in the very grain of America. Duffy has submitted two photos from the Hanging Tree Guitar series to the auction.
