Item Details
Description
This is an original 11-page manuscript account of a collision between the Barque Laconia and a schooner while the Laconia was sailing from Philadelphia to Boston, April 15-16, 1853, and subsequent associated costs. The two-page account summarizes the collision, damage, and the effort made to be towed to New York, including a Surveyor's Report of the damages. It appears as though the captain of the Laconia was Alfred Howes. Also included is a nine-page handwritten detailed, itemized accounting of the costs associated with the towing and repair of the Laconia. Together, these eleven pages make an interesting piece of inland maritime history in the mid-19th century. Chipping to edges of pages; some partial tears along folds; but very readable and complete.
