A LARGE 19TH CENTURY BAVARIAN BLACK FOREST CARVED WOOD BEGGING DOG STAND modelled with glass eyes, raised on both legs holding aloft a tray, upon a naturalistic base. 78 cm x 40 cm. Note: For many years 'Black Forest' carvings were thought to have been produced in the Bavarian Black Forest, in Germany, but it has now been established beyond all doubt that they were the sole province of the Swiss. The wood carving industry of Switzerland originated in the picturesque town of Brienz.
