Description
A very large carved wooden mask with a heavy organic material covering the surface. Bamana masks such as this one are worn and seen only by members of the Komo association, whose members harness the power or nyama contained in the mask to aid members of the community. Powerful materials, including blood, chewed kola nuts, and millet beer are applied to the mask, while prayers and sacrifices are offered. The open mouth symbolize the Komos power to punish those who violate its rules. The mask measures 41 x 10.5 inches, not counting the large heavy duty professional display stand which is also included. Provenance: Ex Robert Banks collection, MD.
