Description
North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Mill River, ca. 1837 CE. A handsome Model 1816 Type III flintlock musket manufactured by D. Nippes. Nippes held a contract with the United States government to manufacture approximately 1600 Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Muskets in Mill Creek, Pennsylvania from 1837 to 1840. The rifle’s original flintlock configuration was changed to a percussion firing mechanism via Belgian cone conversion. The lock is case-hardened steel, and the stock is carved from black walnut. The lock is marked with "US / D. NIPPES / PHILA" below the flash pan brass fill. The barrel tang is dated "1837". The musket has the characteristic Model 1816 low comb stock and ball-shaped sling swivel reinforcement on the trigger guard. Most Model 1816 Flintlock muskets were converted to percussion by the 1860s. This is a fine example of this limited production! Size: 48.5" L x 4" W (123.2 cm x 10.2 cm); bore size: .7" W (1.8 cm)
