Item Details
Description
North Pacific, Hawaii, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A wooden cup made from the inherently beautiful Hawaiian hardwood called milo. This example has a short, tapered leg and a round foot, which is a rare variation and indicates that it was made after the introduction of the lathe in the middle of the 19th century. Milo wood is rare today but was once common in Hawaii during the pre-colonial period. It was often crafted into bowls like this one, called "umeke," an honored vessel for eating poi. The exterior of the vessel boasts a lustrous red-brown wood grain. Size: 3.875" in diameter x 4" H (9.8 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-M. Kobiashi collection, Hawaii, USA, 1960-2000
