Item Details
Description
[CIVIL WAR]. A group of 6 CDVs of unidentified Navy officers, comprising:

Vignette of a Brown Water Navy ensign. Cairo, IL: Munn & Faul, n.d. Imprint and green 3-cent revenue stamp to verso. -- Full-length standing chief engineer (1861 Regulations). Baton Rouge, LA: A.D. Lytle, n.d. Imprint to verso. With double braid on cuffs showing off the double-breasted frock coat and dominant brass buttons. -- A rare view of a weathered senior captain (1852 Regulations). Washington D.C.: Whitehurst, n.d. Imprint to verso and photographer's name printed on studio pedestal. Rank is indicated by the shoulder strap with an eagle in the middle with stars on either side, the undress cap device also containing a flying eagle/anchor within a wreath. -- Full-length standing portrait of a likely lieutenant commander. Cairo, IL: Munn & Faul, n.d. Imprint to verso with blue 2-cent stamp. The slight one-three spacing of the cuff braiding suggests the lieutenant commander rank but lacks the star according to the 1864 Regulations.   The rarely worn dress epaulettes in place of more indicative shoulder straps make a firm determination of rank problematic. -- Three-quarter portrait of a seated second assistant engineer (1864 Regulations) with conforming cap insignia, wearing sword. New Orleans, LA: J.A. Sheldon, n.d. Imprint to verso with blue 2-cent revenue stamp. -- Three-quarter portrait of a seated captain holding old fashioned navy cap with sword on table. Boston: J.W. Black, n.d. -- Together, 6 albumen CDVs on cardstock mounts, condition generally good to very good, ensign carte with lower clipped corners, else near VG. Captain view with heavy wear and badly rounded corners, G. Second Assistant Engineer with lower clipped corners, else VG.   All others VG.
