Description
Period carte-de-visite (CDV) of the original sketch drawn by John Burns Walker of the infamous Andersonville prison. Burns, a member of the 141st PA Infantry, was a prisoner there from 28 May 1864 to 11 May 1865. Walker’s name and regiment can be found at the lower right margin of the sketch. This view is looking to the northeast from the vicinity of the Star Fort. Depicted in the sketch at left center is the north gate; the south gate is partially obscured by the stockade at far right. Through the opening of the outer stockade at lower right can be seen a mounted Confederate officer leading a Union prisoner to the guard house which was located between the inner and outer stockades at the south end. The building depicted between the inner and outer stockade at right center was the cook house. In 1865, Anton Hohenstein took Walker’s sketch and transferred it to a lithograph, improving both the artistry and scale. Hohenstein's lithograph was then published by Thomas S. Sinclair which received widespread distribution.
