John Ernest Haugse (American, 1937-2020). Untitled mixed media still life, ca. 1958. Signed at the lower right. A striking composition by award-winning artist, writer, and filmmaker John Haugse who worked in a distinctive style. The composition is comprised of three vases on a tabletop with a cloth below the leftmost vessel cascading over the edge. All is delineated in a warm palette of russet, sienna, and black on cream-hued paper. Departing from strict representation, Haugse executed this still life through a Cubist lens using form and gesture to achieve his effect. An impressive work by Haugse, set in a custom matte and frame. Size: 16.875" L x 8.75" W (42.9 cm x 22.2 cm) Size: 22.4" L x 14.375" W (56.9 cm x 36.5 cm)

Haugse earned his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied with Richard Diebenkorn and Frank Lobdell, among other luminaries. In 1964, he earned his MFA at the University of Oregon. He also taught in art departments at Harvard University’s Carpenter Center, UC Santa Barbara College of Creative Studies, Lewis and Clark College in Portland, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. In 1976, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship and produced an animated thematic study of love lost and regained entitled "Freefall". At the end of his life he created a rethinking of his memoir about his father, "At A Certain Age: Heavy Snow Revisited". Haugse exhibited his work in galleries in California, Washington and Oregon.

The composition has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in very good condition. It is signed in the plate at the lower right. Frame is intact and excellent. Wired for suspension and ready to display.
