Abraham Lincoln Mourning Ribbon
Pleated black satin mourning cockade with a wide black satin inverted "v" cut extension, 2.5” x 10.5”. A small oval sepia bust portrait of President Lincoln is housed in a 1" round gold-toned button which is mounted at the center of the rosette. Accompanied by a cream and black satin memorial Union Veteran Club ribbon, 2” x 7”, December 12, 1889. Stored in a protective display box with clear glass top which measures 8.25” x 12”.
After President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, a three-week series of events was held to mourn his death and memorialize his life. Funeral services, a procession, and a lying-in-state were first held in Washington, DC, after which a funeral train transported Lincoln's body through 180 cities and 7 states on its way to Lincoln’s home state of Illinois. Scheduled stops for the special funeral train were published in newspapers. At each stop, Lincoln’s coffin was taken off the train, placed on an elaborately decorated horse-drawn hearse and led by solemn processions to a public building for viewing. Thousands of mourners flocked to pay tribute to the slain president. Newspapers reported that people had to wait more than five hours to pass by the president’s coffin in some cities.
