Description
A mourning card commemorating 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), ca. 1865. The card is elaborately blind-embossed with the image of a Roman-lidded sarcophagus, partially draped in cloth and decorated with laurel wreaths and floral bouquets, at center. The side of the tomb is printed: "In Memory of / Abraham Lincoln, / Born February 12th, 1809. / Died April 15th, 1865. / A Martyr to Freedom!" Bordered in black. No artist's or printer's mark is visible. The card is lightly toned with isolated foxing, else near fine. 4.5" x 3." Accompanied by a vintage envelope pen-inscribed "65" near the partly ripped flap verso.
Abraham Lincoln served as president between 1861 and his assassination in April 1865. This mourning card probably dates from the immediate assassination aftermath, when a brisk industry of selling posthumous photographs, commemorative items, and other souvenirs developed.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
