Description
Abraham Lincoln Assassination/Tomb Ephemera, 2 Pcs

Two pieces of vintage ephemera relating to 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), ca. 1865-1877, including a carte de visite glorifying Washington and Lincoln; and a stereograph of the Lincoln Tomb in Springfield, Illinois.  Individual condition issues are noted below, else near fine.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A carte de visite after Kimmel & Forster, "Columbia's Noblest Sons," ca. 1865. The composite image shows an allegorical figure of Columbia crowning George Washington and Abraham Lincoln with laurel wreaths, flanked by vignette scenes of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The sepia-colored albumen photograph is laid down on a cream stock mount. Pencil-inscribed "From old album at Elijah Wheeler's" verso. Expected wear including isolated stains and scuffs, else near fine. 4" x 2.375."

2. A J.A.W. Pittman (Springfield, Illinois) stereograph depicting the Lincoln Tomb (then called the National Lincoln Monument) in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Springfield, Illinois, ca. 1877. The albumen photograph on a bright orange mount shows two nearly identical side-by-side images of the tomb parapet and the sculptural groupings at the base of the obelisk. "Photographed by Pittman, Springfield, Ill." is printed along the right edge, and "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1877, by J.A.W. Pittman, in the office of the Librarian of Congress at Washington, D.C." is printed along the left edge. An extensive description of the photograph is printed verso. Expected surface wear such as gentle scuffs, else near fine, the edges in especially fine condition. 6.875" x 4."

The Lincoln Tomb was designed by Larkin Goldsmith Mead and completed in 1874. The granite, multi-level funerary complex led visitors up balustraded stairs to a parapet topped with an entrance and crypt. An obelisk and various free-standing sculptures completed the design.

A brisk trade sprung up in the immediate assassination aftermath memorializing Lincoln. Photographs, cartes de visite, commemorative items, and other souvenirs relating to his life and death proved very popular.
