Einstein & Oppenheimer Signed Birthday Diary, Fathers of the Atomic Age!

A charming birthday diary signed by scientists Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer. Measures 3.75" x 5", No place, undated [Ca. 1953-4]. A green leather volume made by Artamount, New York in which an owner can record the birth dates of friends, family, and others. Owned by Kari Fjortoft. The diary also includes information on birthstones and their meanings, along with birthday month flowers and wedding anniversary gifts. Each date also provides a short astrological description for the day a person was born. Einstein and Oppenheimer have signed on their birthdays, with March 14 reading "A. Einstein. 53." and April 22 reading "Robert Oppenheimer." Additional names, addresses, contact information, and notes of friends, colleagues, and others can be found throughout the small book. There is a small note taped into one page, written in Hebrew. The birthday book has wear and rubbing to the leather edges, with toning to the internal page edges. Soundly bound with bold signatures. Overall very fine. This is the only item we've seen that's been signed by both Fathers of the Atomic Age.

Robert Oppenheimer was the wartime head of the Los Alamos Laboratory and is credited with being the "father of the atomic bomb". Although of different generations, both he and Einstein worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. It was on the basis of Einstein's recommendation that President Roosevelt sought to investigate the U.S. using nuclear weapons such as an atomic bomb, and it was Oppenheimer who directed the Manhattan Project which developed the bomb.

Einstein and Oppenheimer's Birthday Entries:
March 14: "You are fond of society, a good conversationalist and your company is sought by all. You are energetic and a clear thinker. You should achieve great success in anything you undertake with your blessed combination of ambition and friendly disposition."

April 22: "You have musical talent which should be developed. You are positive in your opinions, but when thoroughly convinced, yield with good grace. You have a clear and alert mind and keen foresight. You are capable of a deep and sacrificing love."
