Item Details
Description
Near East or Central Asia, Anatolia to Iran, Persian Empire, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pottery libation vessel composed of a boot with a pointed tip and impressed linear marking along the upper and sole to represent stitching. A suspension ring is set into the rim, the interior is hollow all the way to the toe. Shoes or boots with upturned toes seem to have been popular in the ancient Near East, particularly in northwestern Iran and the area around the Caspian coast. Vessels like this one were made to be buried with the dead and may have been thought to help the deceased on their journey through the afterlife. Size: 7" L x 3" W x 4.5" H (17.8 cm x 7.6 cm x 11.4 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
