Europe, Jurassic period, ca. 201.3 to 145 million years ago; North American, Pleistocene (Ice Age), ca. 1.8 million to 10,000 years ago. A fine collection of 5 fossilized horse teeth and 1 fossilized ammonite shell! The teeth are molars from the Equus genus of Ice Age horses, identifiable by the tooth dentition. Teeth like these show the pattern of dentition known as hypsodont, meaning they are high-crowned teeth with enamel extending past the gum line, allowing extra material for wear and tear. This is suitable for an abrasive diet of eating grass - grasses contain phytoliths, silica-rich granules, which wear away teeth, so these teeth are an adaptation to that. The surfaces of all are a rich matte black with some glossy areas. The ammonite is from the Quenstedtoceras genus, known for the tight spiral and ribbed exterior, and fully excavated and three dimensional. Size (ammonite): 1.75" Diameter x 0.5" W (4.4 cm x 1.3 cm); (longest tooth): 3" L x 0.75" W (7.6 cm x 1.9 cm)

Several species of prehistoric horse roamed North America during the Pleistocene: including Equus alaskae, Equus simplicidens, and Equus lambei. The horse died out in North America sometime between 10,000 and 7,000 years ago; not to be seen on the continent again until the reintroduction of horses by Spanish explorers in 15th and 16th century.
