Item Details
Description
Oceania, southern Philippines, Moro peoples, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. An impressive spear or sibat of the "budiak" style, presenting an elongated wooden shaft adorned with a tubular brass band just below the pointed steel head. Enveloped in a hue of chocolate brown, the slender, cylindrical shaft rises to the steel head of the spear, which displays a lengthy blade with a gently risen spine, a slanted shoulder, and a lightly flared tang. The lustrous brass band serves to both secure the steel head and decorate the smoothly carved shaft. Size: 1.4" W x 68" H (3.6 cm x 172.7 cm); 68.8" H (174.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Spanish for "Moor," the term "Moro" is a collective name for Islamic peoples of the Philippines, which are comprised of 13 ethnolinguistic groups that make up about 5% of the Philippines, or 5 million people.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 1995 to 2010
