Description

(1920 - 1952) Highly decorated USAF fighter pilot and flying ace of World War II and the Korean War. Davis rose to the rank of major, and was promoted posthumously to lieutenant colonel and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in 'MiG Alley' during the latter war. He was the only flying ace of the United States to be killed in action in Korea. Rare first day postal cover honoring the U.S. Army, Washington, Sep. 28, 1945, signed across the face adding: 'USAF'. Fine.
