Description
Oil on canvas. Half-length portrait of Dr. Todd, with his medical books and microscope behind him. In its original frame, 40" high, 33" wide (overall). Joseph H. Todd, MD (1838-1936) was born and lived his entire life in Wooster. He was a medical student during the Civil War and apparently provided medical help at the Battle of Gettysburg. He practiced medicine in Wooster for decades and become one of the most respected doctors in the area (and beyond). He was also a noted collector of artifacts and fossils. Among Dr. Todd?s contemporaries was Michael Nachtrieb (1835-1916), a Civil War veteran and noted portraitist. He also worked decorated cabins on Ohio and Mississippi River steamboats.
