The Philippine-American War spanned from 1899 to 1902 following the 1898 signing of the Treaty of Paris, which annexed the previously Spanish-owned territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines under the control of the United States. The former, refusing to acknowledge the independence of the new Philippine Republic, declared under McKinley a policy of "benevolent assimilation" on the part of American sovereignty. What followed was a series of armed conflicts that eventually ended in the summer of 1902 with the signing of the Philippine Organic Act. The Republic of the Philippines would not receive full independence until July 4, 1946 under the Treaty of Manila.
