Description
Seven French engravings. Six from "Description de l'Egypte, ou Recueil des observations et des recherches qui ont ete faites en Egypte pendant l'expedition de l'armee francaise" (Description of Egypt, or the collection of observations and researches which were made in Egypt during the expedition of the French Army), 1809-1829. Publisher: French government - Author: Commission des sciences et arts d'Egypte. One from "Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte" (Voyages in Lower and Upper Egypt), 1802. Publisher: M. Peltier in London, England - Author: Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon (French, 1747-1825). This series of publications aimed to present a comprehensive catalogue of the monuments of ancient and modern Egypt. More than 160 scholars and scientists - referred to as "the savants" - accompanied Napoleon's expedition to Egypt from 1798 to 1801 in addition to approximately 2,000 artists, among them 400 engravers. Size of largest: 20.5" W x 26.75" H (52.1 cm x 67.9 cm)

Six pages in this lot are from Volume II of "Description de l'Egypte" and include: Plate G "Mourad Bey" (Murad Bey Mohammed, Egyptian Mamluk chieftain, cavalry commander, and ruler, c. 1750 to 1801); Plate h "Medailles Koufiques" (Kufic Medals); Plate XVII "Le Brodeur au Tambour" (The Drum Embroiderer) and "Le Fabricant de Feutres" (The Felt Maker); Plate XVIII "Le Macon" (The Mason) and "Le Couvreur" (The Roofer); Plate XX "Le Faiseur de Nattes" (The Mat Maker) and "Le Faiseur de Couffes" (The Cupmaker); Plate 92 "Vues Perspectives Interieres d'une Maison Particuliere" (Interior Perspective Views of a Private House). The last engraving is from "Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte" by Dominique Vivant, Baron Denon and includes: "Vue aupres d'Alexandrie" (View over Alexandria), "Vue de l'Obelisque de Cleopatre (View of Cleopatra's Obelisk), Vue du grand Pharillon (View of the grand Pharillon), and "Vue du Port-neuf d'Alexandrie" (View of the Port-neuf of Alexandria).

Page from "Voyage dans la basse et la haute Egypte" has tearing and folds. Others have slight creases and losses to edges. Areas of staining/foxing - most to the margins but some staining in compositions - all commensurate with age. Three are inscribed in pencil in lower right corner.
