Description
19th century oil on canvas painting of a most mischievous cat. Likely American, ca. 1850s - 1890s. Label reads " 'The Chase' E. Powell". The painting depicts a genre scene, showing an exasperated woman surprised by the mess made in her cozy home by her mischievous cat whilst chasing a troublesome mouse. Milk has spilled onto the ground, and the bread has fallen off the table. Various plates and vases have fallen from their places, and smashed on the ground. The cat is perched in the cupboard, ready to strike again, as a young man peers around the doorway, smirking at the chaos. This is a delightful and hilarious painting, worthy of any fine home. In addition, it is a characteristic example of the playfulness and humor of American and European (especially Dutch) art in the middle of the nineteenth century. The painting was recently restored, and the frame was beautifully regilded. Craquelure is present throughout the piece, but there are no areas of evident loss. Canvas stretcher: 30" wide by 25" tall. Frame: 40" wide by 35 1/2" tall.Note: Not eligible for in-house shipping. Keywords: paint, painter, artist, domestic, comfy, funny, art, decor, decoration, design, interior, traditional, classic, wall, house, home, household, scene
