Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian period, ca. 1925 to 1595 BCE. A remarkable stone seal bead featuring a pair of confronting figures, one holding a staff and the other a scorpion, as a pair of winged quadrupeds are pictured behind them. Known as 'kishib' in Sumerian, cylinder seals like this example were used by individuals in every level of society - from kings and rulers to merchants and tradespeople to workers and slaves - to communicate messages. A wonderful mythical scene from ancient Babylon! Size: 1.2" L x 0.5" Diameter (3 cm x 1.3 cm)
