Native American, Northern United States / Canada, Inupiaq or Yupik people, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A shamanic wood dance mask with rods projecting outward with additional carvings. The main mask face is encircled by an otter, and the projections symbolize hunting and fishing - small figures in kayaks with fish and tools. These masks were traditionally made under the direction of shamans and had different functions- some might be intended to wear as masks during ceremonies and others may be made to hang in the home for healing or to bring fortune during hunts.
