L'amicizia iniziale della Repubblica e degli Stati Uniti non doveva durare. Nel giro di pochi anni la questione della neutralità americana nel conflitto tra Francia e Inghilterra divise le due Repubbliche.

Here the French Republic extends a friendly hand to all democracies, but especially the United States and the Swiss Cantons, and announces its policy of amity and alliance with those two republics. The early friendship of the Republic and the U.S. was not to last. Within a few years the question of American neutrality in the conflict between France and England divided the two republics.
