East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An inviting pottery head of a mingqi or "spirit utensil" presenting a round visage of slender eyes, a fleshy nose, a gentle, close-lipped smile, and a square jaw. The coiffure is centrally parted and pulled back into a bun with a pair of long ears just below. Mingqi are figurines that represent necessities and comforts the deceased needs to continue in the afterlife. Ming qi became popular during the Han Dynasty and would persist for several centuries afterwards. Size: 3" W x 4" H (7.6 cm x 10.2 cm); 7" H (17.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Fragment of a larger piece with expected signs of fragmentation along the neckline. Nicks and abrasions to surface, commensurate with age, but otherwise, excellent with great remaining pigments and nice earthen deposits.
