Description
One of seven sets produced in the Colt custom shop and given to family members of John Wayne. This set was owned by Patrick Wayne, acclaimed movie star and second son of John Wayne. Gun A: Typical patent dates are found on the left side of the frame followed by a rampant Colt. "VP" proof on the left side of the trigger guard and "45 CAL". Single line company address on the top of the barrel. The barrel has a gold inlay eagle with a "JOHN WAYNE" banner in its beak. Recoil shield has gold portrait of "The Duke". Loading gate has a gold star. Gold etched rampant horse and back shot of John Wayne on the six shot unfluted cylinder. Back strap has John Wayne's signature etched. 4-3/4" barrel gun with blade front sight and u-notch rear. Engraved by master engraver Alvin White. Dark blue finish with fine scroll engraving. Gold inlay borders on the cylinder. Backstrap, trigger guard, hammer, ejector rod, cylinder pin and trigger are all gold washed with fine scroll engraving as well. Checkered white plastic grips with gold washed screw. Gun B: Typical patent dates are found on the left side of the frame followed by a rampant Colt. "VP" proof on the left side of the trigger guard and "45 CAL". Single line company address on the top of the barrel. The barrel has a gold inlay eagle with a "JOHN WAYNE" banner in its beak. Recoil shield has gold etched SAA in a leather gun belt. Loading gate has a gold etched set of spurs. Six shot unfluted cylinder has a gold laser engraved portrait of "The Duke" on one side and Wayne riding a horse on the other. Wayne's signature is etched into the back strap with a gold etched "D" on the top. 4-3/4" barrel gun with blade front sight and u-notch rear. Nickel finish throughout. Fine custom shop scroll engraving with a punch dot background. Dark walnut grips with white inlay Colt logo on the left side. Gun C: Gold etched patent dates in Gen III style on the left side of the frame followed by a rampant Colt. Small "VP" proofs present as well. Single line company address on the top of the barrel. Left side of the barrel has a gold etched federal eagle carrying a banner with "JOHN WAYNE". Six shot unfluted cylinder has a gold laser engraved portrait of "The Duke" on one side and Wayne riding a horse on the other. Wayne's signature is etched into the back strap with a gold etched "D" on the top. 4-3/4" barrel with blade front sight and u-notch rear. Original dark Colt blue finish with some floral engraving on the frame and barrel. White grips. Each gun includes its original Colt wood grain Styrofoam boxes with papers inside. Two still have the end labels. One is missing. A wood display case with red velvet lining is also included. CONDITION: Gun A: Very fine overall with 98% plus finish. Grips are excellent. Bore is clean and crisp. No signs of use or handling. Action is crisp. No drag line on the cylinder. Gun B: Retains 90% of its finish, with some areas of the nickel having light tarnish and scratches. Grips are excellent. Clean bore with strong rifling. Tight hammer and cylinder. Crisp mechanics. No drag line on the cylinder. Gun C: Very fine overall with 98% plus finish. Grips are excellent. Bore is clean and crisp. No signs of use or handling. Action is crisp. No drag line on the cylinder.
