Description

An excellent collection of soldier and officer portraits, including: Albumen CDV full-length studio portrait of Lt. Colonel John Hodges, Jr. New York: R.A. Lewis. Photographer's imprint to verso, later pencil inscription identifies the subject with service information. Hodges enlisted at the opening of the war on 14 April 1861 as a private and was mustered into Co. I of the 8th Massachusetts Infantry for 90 days service, and after the short term re-enlisted the same month he mustered out, earning a commission as a 1st lieutenant into Company B of the 19th Massachusetts Infantry. He resigned on 19 June 1862 for unspecified reasons but re-enlisted yet again on 11 November, now as a major with the 50th Massachusetts, mustering out with the regiment on 24 August 1863 at Wenham, Massachusetts. He enlisted a final time, now as a lieutenant colonel with the 59th Massachusetts. It was with this regiment that he was killed in action at the Battle of the Crater during the Siege of Petersburg on 30 July 1864.

Albumen CDV ¾ studio portrait of Signal Quartermaster Peter Brace. Lisbon, Portugal: A.C. Pardal & Filho. Photographer's imprint to mount verso alongside period ink inscription identifying the subject: "Peter Brace / Signal Quarter Mast. Canandaigua". The USS Canandaigua was heavily involved in the blockade of Charleston and joined the European Station in November 1865. Here, Brace is seated in his sailors uniform with insignia visible.

Albumen CDV full-length studio portrait of Private Philip M. Conkle (1840-1913), Co. F., 115th Ohio Infantry. Cincinnati, Ohio: Dewey & Gibson, [1862]. Photographer's imprint to verso alongside ink inscription: "Philip Conkle, Cousin of Mothers Almira Conkle, Daughter of Jonathan Conkle, 1862." Conkle is depicted in uniform with a bugle looped over his arm.
