Description
Battle Flags of the New Hampshire Regiments. Seventh N.H. Vol. Infantry. Albumen CDV. Concord, New Hampshire: Kimball & Son, 1866. Series and image titles with copyright statement printed to recto. Photographer's Main and School Sts. imprint on mount verso.
A studio view of a 35-star American flag, showing the tatters of war, with the regiment designation, "7th Regiment / New Hampshire Vols." on red horizontal stripes. The 7th New Hampshire Infantry was organized and mustered in at Manchester, NH on 13 December 1861. Serving in the same brigade as the 7th Connecticut Infantry, together they were often jointly referred to as the "77th New England." They fought in Putnam's Brigade during the Second Battle of Fort Wagner in the same attacking column as the 54th Massachusetts. They also saw action at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff during the Siege of Petersburg.
A very rare view of the regimental colors of the 7th New Hampshire, taken as a part of a larger series documenting the flags of New Hampshire regiments by Kimball & Son in the immediate post war. A very rare carte, online records indicate only 1 other copy sold at auction as part of a large collection from the series (Cowan's Auctions, Lot 290, American History, 13 June 2014). While other regiments from the series are occasionally held in institutions, OCLC and online records find no evidence of an institutional copy of the 7th NH Infantry.
