Item Details
Description
Roman Empire, 1st century CE, Loeschcke Type 4. Perhaps the most desirable of all Roman lamp forms are those with gladiatorial scenes. This mold-made lamp shows a single gladiator standing in profile. He is of a type known as a murmillo - who wears a large crested helmet and fights with a small sword, holding a shield in his left hand. Murmillos, also called murmillones, often fought thraex (Thracian) or hoplomachus, with whom he shared some of the equipment (notably arm guards and all-enclosing helmet, and the dangerous short sword). A number of ancient authors, including Valerius Maximus and Quintillian, assert that he also regularly fought the retiarius - the large, slow-moving, net-throwing gladiator often featured in so many movies. This particular lamp was signed on the base by L. M. C., a workshop we have not been able to identify. Size: 4" L x 2.875" W (10.2 cm x 7.3 cm)
