Description
Helen Palmer was the sister of Hattie Palmer, the writer of the previous two diaries. She was a schoolteacher, and the diary is a clear document on what the life of a mid-19th century teacher in rural northeast Ohio was like. Not sure if she was older or younger than Hattie, but they were likely not too many years apart. In one entry, Helen describes herself as feeling poorly but attending a “donation” anyhow. She mentions her sister, Hattie, carrying her. Where the previous diary reveals a young woman struggling sometimes with other than pure religious thought, Helen seems very focused on two things: teaching and service to God. The writer seems to often be either “not feeling well” or tired much of the time. Many names are mentioned throughout the diary. Spaces for every day of the year are filled in with Helen’s thoughts and comments. Leather covers (front cover detached). 3.125 x 4.25
