Civil War
Gettysburg, PA, July, 1863
Gettysburg: "A Harvest of Death" Original Photo Negative. One of the Most Essential Images of the Civil War & its Most Iconic Landscape Photograph. A Museum Quality Piece! Ex. Brown Brothers Archive.
Photograph
Extremely scarce glass negative, 6.5" x 8.5" of Timothy H. O'Sullivan?s enduring photograph, "A Harvest of Death, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania," which depicts the misty corpse-strewn field of Gettysburg, the venue for the deadliest battle of the Civil War. Deemed the best-known of the Civil War landscapes, this photograph was published in Gardner?s Photographic Sketch Book of the War (1866), the nation?s first anthology of photographs. In fine condition, with some "ink" loss to bottom area, else fine.
A quick Google search shows the rarity of prints as examples are currently in the collection of the MoMA, Harvard, the Smithsonian's Natural Museum of American History, & the Art Institute of Chicago. We offered a print earlier this year which sold for $2,250, this original photo negative is the only example we have ever seen to hit the auction block.? Such an image conveys a useful moral: It shows the blank horror and reality of war, in opposition to its pageantry.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
