Description
A rarely-encountered suit of English tilting armor. The close helmet with well wrought one-piece skull and characteristic high comb with roped border, the upper visor with distinct central ridge and single narrow ocularium with engraved border along the brow and a deeply embossed ridge beneath, retainingits lifting knob, the lower visor with pronounced peak and sharp central ridge which are characteristic of English work. The visors and bevor sharing a common pivot as is typical, secured by a profiled hook closure. The gorget composed of two pairs of lames with turned edges and embossed panels, secured by a buckled leather strap with studded borders and roped edges. The helmet and breastplate overlay a secondary gorget which adds additional protection to the throat and chest as far as the base of the sternum, with hinged fastening and double-lame collar with roped border. The breastplate with embossed borders at the clavicles and a distinct central ridge terminating in a characteristic peascod, and fitted with a well-wrought lance rest with profiling and sprung catch, the broadly-flanged lower edge supporting a fauld of three plates. The backplate connecting to the breastplate with straps and a waist belt. With complete arm defenses, the spaulders of eight lames each. The rerebraces terminating in rolled and roped borders, the inner arms protected by winged couters with poleyns supported by an additional lame at each edge, the lower canons en suite with rolled edges. The articulated gauntlets composed of seven plates in addition to the thumbs (fingers lacking.) The tassets well-embossed in five segments, the rare codpiece intact, retained by toggle-pin. Each cuisse composed of a single plate with rolled and roped edge, the knee cops constructed of four plates with wings. The finely formed greaves closed with buckled straps, the multiple-lame sabatons with pointed toe, following the civilian fashion of the period. Third quarter of the 16th century. General wear, helmet with period repairs to chin and interior patch, lance rest added, backplate associated, legs associated, gauntlets Victorian era, the fingers lacking, some straps torn, some replaced, leather friable, areas of old light pitting. Overall height 167cm / 65 3/4". Condition III. STAND NOT INCLUDED.
